- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2018I loved this book. There are some bits in the middle which get a bit too abstract and theoretical for me which I kind of drifted though unconsciously - the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars - but coming out the other side I'd recommend this book to anyone who has (or is experiencing) experienced their lives turning to mush and meaninglessness. a very therapeutic read.

It will be one that I recommend to everyone.
Please read it and see for yourself.
She will help you to relieve pressure and smile more, if you really take it in
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 July 2013Buying it to read whilst going through something as difficult as illness and death of a loved one was always going to be a challenge.
It is quite 'hard reading' but I'm persevering and can only read a few pages at a time. Half-way through the book...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2009I have been practising (or at least trying) Buddhist teachings for over 20 years, have used therapy to explore my self/my attachments and have explored a number of different personal growth tools and techniques during that time. I think it is fair to say that Pema Chodron's book is the first one that I have ever read that is written in plain English without excessive or heavy reference to Buddhist theory/terms and written so clearly from personal knowledge and experience rather than being couched in theoretical interpretation. Pema knows (underlined!) what she is talking about. This is a very good book, both for those wishing to understand what Buddhism means in practical terms and those on a therapeutic journey who want to understand themselves more fully. I could say so many good things, but the best one is simply this... this book is a postcard from someone who has already been on the journey and has had the compassion and insight to send us a simple and clear description of the road ahead... and to think she wasn't sure if this material would make a book! My thanks and gratitude go to Pema Chodron for sending this to us.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 May 2013The author says of buddhism that it takes account of both the good and so-called bad without judging either. (My summary.) Instead what you get is practical advice based on age-old experience on how to break those deep-rooted in-grained patterns that one may scarcely even be aware of. These are the habits which make us repeat again and again (and again!) the same old behaviours which we wish we could be rid of but can't. This book excels in describing what the author sometimes refers to as tricks - although this makes it sound superficial which it is not. These "tricks" are really more like insights based on profound experience but which can be deadly relevant and presented without too much fanfare . This is the best explanation to my western mind of a day-to-day experience of buddhism that I have come across. The author's own experiences are included to explain where she is coming form. It is a no-nonsense guide, I would say only for someone who is serious about a change in their life - maybe someone who has tried other approaches without success - but if that cap fits then you might not find its equal. You just might end up having compassion - for yourself as well as others.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2021It was a good experience but long reading.
So recommend it to all struggle people with their thoughts and life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book, quick delivery
This is a fascinating book on some Buddhist principles that can be of use when facing challenging events or periods, even if you are not Buddhist but have an open mind to different ways of approaching difficulties. I found this very helpful and interesting, and delivery was quick. Already recommended this book to a friend who is loving it too.
